Anxiety | Depression

The New York Times (2022) claimed anxiety is an “inner pandemic” amongst teenagers. Anxiety is increasing in our society with alarming rapidity. Forbes Health reports that over 300 million people have reported experiencing anxiety on a regular basis.

So, if you are feeling anxiousness, nervousness, restlessness, or uncontrolled worry, you are not alone.Anxiety can also present as uneasiness or a sense of dread—like you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop. It may also show up in physical symptoms such as headaches, upset stomachs, nausea, heart palpitations, or hyperventilation.

Though depression can cause feelings of loneliness, many adults struggle with it. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (2021), approximately 21 million adults reported having “at least one” episode of depressive disorder.

This mood disorder can make you feel gloomy, anxious, or guilty, or cause you to have a dismal outlook.

Depression can zap your energy and motivation, robbing you of joy and making it difficult to experience pleasure in the things you once loved. It might also make you feel worthless—like you are a disappointment to yourself or others.

Boundaries | People Pleasing

Do you struggle to express your opinions or find it hard to say “no” to others? People-pleasing is a form of self-abandonment, where we place others’ needs above our own—often in search of validation, acceptance, or approval. This pattern is frequently rooted in the belief, “I’m not enough,” or in the fear of losing a relationship.

When people-pleasing takes hold, setting boundaries can feel daunting. The thought of doing so may trigger intense emotions, anxiety, or a strong urge to avoid conflict altogether.

Boundaries, however, are essential for healthy relationships and self-respect. They are the personal limits we set to define what is and isn’t acceptable—helping us manage connections, communicate expectations, and practice assertiveness. Think of boundaries as a protective line in the sand: they safeguard your well-being, prevent manipulation, and honor both your needs and your worth.

Trauma | PTSD | EMDR

“Psychological trauma is the unique individual experience… in which the individual’s ability to integrate his or her emotional experience is overwhelmed and/or the individual experiences (subjectively) a threat to life, bodily integrity, or sanity.” — Saakvitne et al., 2000

Trauma can impact the brain in profound ways. Traumatic memories may resurface not only through recollection of events but also as “bodily and feeling memories” (Fisher). The brain can become conditioned to respond to any perceived danger—real or imagined. Post-traumatic symptoms may persist for years after the event has occurred.

Our team is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidence-based psychotherapy treatment proven effective for Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders.

What is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)? According to EMDR Consulting, EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach that uses bilateral stimulation movement to help the brain update past memories with new information moving past emotional blocks “to the adaptive present” (Shapiro, 2018).

The American Psychiatric Association, Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs and the World Health Organization (WHO) are a few organizations that acknowledge the efficacy of EMDR. For a more detailed explanation, please visit the EMDR Institute, Inc.

Grief | Bereavement

Bereavement is the period we go through after experiencing a loss, while grief is the deep emotional pain that follows. We may grieve the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the loss of a career, or even parts of ourselves. Grief takes many forms and often unfolds in stages—though it doesn’t always follow a straight path.

As Brené Brown reminds us, “Giving language to emotions shapes affect.” Naming what we feel can help us begin to understand and process it. Speaking with someone in a safe, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space can be a powerful step toward working through these complex emotions.

Family | Relationship Issues

Family and couple relationships can be deeply rewarding—but they can also face complex challenges. Multiple perspectives, shared histories, and interconnected dynamics can make it difficult to navigate issues such as enmeshed family systems, addiction, unresolved trauma, codependency, struggles with intimacy, or infidelity.

Healthy, supportive relationships are a vital part of both emotional and physical well-being. At A Therapist Clinical Counseling, we provide a safe, compassionate space where couples and families can explore the deeper patterns influencing their connections. Together, we work to uncover the root causes of conflict, strengthen communication, and rebuild trust—fostering deeper understanding, emotional closeness, and meaningful, lasting transformation.

Overwhelming Emotions | Distress Tolerance | DBT

Certain mental health challenges can leave you feeling swept away by intense emotions, as if you’re barely keeping your head above water. You may experience your feelings deeply and powerfully, making it hard to navigate daily life. Emotional dysregulation can intensify this struggle, heightening the sense of overwhelm.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) provides practical, evidence-based skills to help you build emotional resilience. With these tools, you can learn to tolerate distress, respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively, and avoid unintentionally making difficult moments worse.
